7 Books Featuring Mythology

Since my The Legend Mirror series is heavily based on mythology, I thought I'd recommend some other books that feature gods and creatures.

I've had my ups and downs with this series, but ultimately it's fun and has a great murder mystery storyline. This one's Arthurian Legend.

A fabulous fantasy book with unicorns, other great mythical creatures, and a f/f romance!!

Djinni! This book is just wonderful - atmospheric and rich with detail, and it made me seriously emotional.

A perfect blend of Beauty & The Beast, greek mythology, with a love that has a serious Hades/Persephone vibe? This is one of my all-time favourites and makes me heart all smushy.

Another hit-or-miss one. But this features ORACLES. Which is pretty darn epic. It also adds a bit of mystery to the pot, which is always great.

One of my favourite series ever. Effortlessly combines super soldiers, a dystopian america (potential utopia actually, which is cool), and GODS AND MYTHOLOGY!! It's epic, read it. It is adult, though, so it's not recommended for younger readers.

An amazing series, one of my favourite YA fantasies ever. Banshees and reapers and all sorts of other great creatures. Plus incarnations of sins and vices - envy, greed etc. Truly inventive, and fun, and swoony toward the end of the series. Highly recommend.

A girl becomes captive of the king but Rumpelstiltskin may have the magic to help her.

When a door appears in the wall of thorns around a cursed kingdom, a Feline girl accidentally wakes Sleeping Beauty with a kiss.

6 Queer Books & Why You Should Read Them!

In an effort to cultivate some actual content for this blog, I give you: A BUNCH OF QUEER BOOKS! These are ones I've read. My next post will be queer books I'm dying to read. It's Pride Month, and #ReadProud is going on, so it seems like the perfect time to waffle on about these books I love.

Lady main character who likes other ladies! Revenants! Super cool mystery & thriller, effortlessly woven with paranormal creatures that feel more magical realism. A damn terrifying villain-in-a-cave. Perfect!

As important as it is horrifying. The romance is hesitant and stumbling and sweet, as you'd expect it to be, and the characters are so genuine it seems impossible they're fictional. The story surrounding the romance is vital, and everyone, regardless of race, should read it, along with an #ownvoices book on the same era.

Super cute f/f romance in a setting inspired by Africa. This book has been written with a lot of love and passion and it shows in the writing. Plus it has unicorns and other mythical creatures, great family relationships, and deals with the ripples of sexual assault.

Another lady main character who likes ladies (I'm 80% sure she's bisexual but my memory is a sieve so I can't confirm.) Vampires and pyramids and a WHOLE LOT of adventure. It's what you would call a romp, and it's damn fun while also meaningful. It has a lot of heart, and family bonds, and is the most creative and thoughtful book I've read in ages.

Bisexual main character. Deals with religion and teen pregnancy. Powerful and memorable. Plus it's in verse, which is so my thing. Even though I was disappointed by the ending, I still love the book.

One of my favourite sci-fi books ever. Found family, diverse crew in ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and species. Just everything I've ever wanted in a space-based book.

Here's a little more about THE BEAST OF CALLAIRE (POC, L, A), my book in the promo:

Enter a world of magic and shifters in this urban fantasy series.

Yasmin is the daughter of a goddess and a mythical creature. As a Legendary, she has telepathic power and the ability to change forms every full moon.

When a voice cries out to Yasmin in her head, and she’s drawn into dreams that aren’t her own, she's led to Fray - a girl who once saved Yasmin from hunters. In Fray’s dreams she has power no human should ever have. Legendary power. And worse, somehow that power is linked to a shadowy god.

When Fray’s magic catches the attention of a violent and invincible creature, both Yasmin’s mythical world and Fray’s human one will be changed forever. A Gods war is brewing, and Yasmin and Fray are at the heart of it.

A demon’s eye glitters in the harp’s reflection. At that narrowed glare, my nerves awaken. I wipe my palms on my crisp trousers, heft the harp into my arms, and walk through heavy purple curtains onto the stage as Mr. Vincent booms, “Next we have Rosenfay Marsh on the harp.”

Every millisecond of expectant silence from the audience sends a new prick of nervousness through me.

“Don’t disappoint me,” the demon hisses.

JANUARY: The Legend Mirror #2 gets a title and blurb!

Happy 2015! I hope the new year is treating you good. I'm having an ... interesting January. I'm experiencing a totally new pace of writing, which is to say: slow. Agonizingly slow. Snail's pace. I'm hoping it picks up pretty soon so I can actually finish a book this year. Oop.

But enough of that. The title probably clued you in - I'm working on the second book in The Legend Mirror series, my YA mythological fantasy. If you haven't read it (or have and just can't remember what it's all about), The Legend Mirror follows Yasmin, a teenage girl who shape-shifts into a mythic beast, others kids like her in the Red - a group of Legendaries - and Fray, a human girl with a psychic connection to, and romance with, Yasmin. If it interests you, you can find more into on the nav bar at the top and buy links on the side.

The title of book two is

You've probably seen this title floating around my blogs and my website if you happen to go into the individual book pages, but now it's official!

The Dryad of Callaire follows on from book one, taking you into the aftermath of the fight with Discordia and the abduction of Fray. As the title suggests, a dryad (or two) features heavily in the story. This book will also see the introduction of a new Legendary main character! Here's the initial blurb:

The Legend Mirror series returns with more mythology, more danger, and more Majick as Yasmin Wikke sets out on a grief-driven quest to find her missing girlfriend. To get her back, Yasmin will have to ally with Gods, rely upon strangers, and go to extreme lengths. But is rescuing Fray the right path? Has her time away from Callaire altered her beyond repair? And will Yasmin and Fray’s relationship survive even if one of them doesn’t?

A release of August has been penciled in, but nothing is definite so this could change. You can expect a full blurb, cover reveal, and a reveal of the redesigned The Beast of Callaire cover in the months to come!

Let me know your thoughts on the blurb and title! Will you be reading The Dryad of Callaire?
