LGBT Lit Recs: CLAUDIE ARSENEAULT

Did I combine my love of book recs and my appreciation of LGBTQIA authors? Heck yes, I did. LGBT Lit Recs is a monthly series of guest posts where LGBT+ authors recommend their favourite queer books! There'll be a post every last Wednesday of each month.

This month I am super, super excited to have Claudie Arseneault, author of a whole bunch of queer-inclusive books, on Words From Saruuh. Here's Claudie's recommended reads:

A Timeline of LGBTQIAP+ SFF

Hey, wonderful strangers! It is my great pleasure to occupy this space today, and do one of my favourite things of all: sneeze great SFF recs written by LGBTQIAP+ authors, and featuring those characters, and infect everyone with them!

And because I can, these will be presented not in order of my favourite (I could never pick), but in “chronological” order. Not that they’re in the same world. Or on a clear Earth-like timeline in relation to one another… but hey. It’s a thing! *throws confettis* Let’s get to the fun part right away.

1. DAUGHTER OF MYSTERY, by Heather Rose Jones

First of a historical fantasy novel featuring two amazing women unraveling mysteries, falling in love, and carving their place into the high society and politics of Alpennia. It is a-ma-zing. The prose fits the period, the characters are deep, with complex and often conflicting relationships, the plot builds and flows and captivates.

2. ARIAH, by B.R. Sanders

I always have a hard time describing this novel. ARIAH is not an adventure novel. The story follows the eponymous character throughout formative years of his life, as he learns to master and understand his magical gift. It’s an exploration—of cultural shock, of friendship and love, of the mutual influence people have on each other. ARIAH is intense and captivating, somehow feeling both slow and inexorable. Perhaps it’s its depth, perhaps it’s the subjects touched upon. Whichever the case, this is one of my favourite recent reads.

3. CHAMELEON MOON, by RoAnna Sylver

Aaah, this book. I will never make a LGBTQIAP+ recs without a mention for the Chameleon Moon series. I cannot. Set in Parole, a city barely holding above a lava lake and threatening to sink in, contained by a force field and filled with people wielding superhero-like powers, CHAMELEON MOON features an amazingly diverse cast and tells a story of friendship and love and hope in the face of overwhelming odds. A dys-hope-ia, as RoAnna loves to call it (and I like to parrot). Get this book. Now. And keep an eye out for the second in the series, coming out this fall!

4. FOURTH WORLD, by Lyssa Chiavari

Who’s up for an archeological mystery on Mars? Not one, but two ace spectrum protagonists? Reading this book has given me some of the most amazing “it me” feels, and considering how far you sometimes have to dig for good ace rep by ace writers? Yes yes yes. But don’t be fooled, it has a thrilling plot, great characters, solid and sometimes gorgeous prose, and an amazing worldbuilding to go with it. Plus if you fall in love with the novel, a sequel novella (DIFFERENT WORLDS) is coming out this fall!

5. ASCENSION, by Jacqueline Koyanagi

From semi-near future sci-fi, we jump into starships and space opera. ASCENCION is a masterful novel, led by a black lesbian with chronic pain who stows away on a ship. It’s intense, both in action and emotion, and it has one of my favourite tropes: Crew Before All. I love stories with group of friends who stick together above all else. It also explore complex sibling relationships, and grief, and disability, all of it while taking you on a non-stop ride of events. I devoured this book and highly recommend it to, well, anyone.

There are, of course, many others. Kiran Oliver was here last month and you should definitely watch for his, DAYBREAK RISING. And he mentioned Shira Glassman’s Mangoverse, another eternal source of joy for me. But five sounds like a good number, doesn’t it? And if you want more, you can always check out my own stuff! I have a political fantasy with a friendship focus lined up for publication with a large and almost exclusively LGBTQIAP+ cast, and I’m really excited about it. Add it on Goodreads if that’s your jam, or take a look at my sci-fi adventure novel, already on the shelves!

Words & Wonders (65)

Welcome to Words & Wonders, a weekly journal of writing updates, links I've found useful or interesting, and book recommendations. I hope W&W will prove to be useful to you writers out there as well as offering an insight into my writing progress for my readers. Don't forget to leave a comment with your own writing progress!

Oops, a bit late this week!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- I'm still in the research trenches for The Lux Guardians and rereading The Wandering. I read 75% of the book this week! A whole lot of reading.

- I also prepped TLM, Books 1-3 for release (IT'S OUT NOW!!)

- And I've planned The Revelation. I'm so damn near having a complete book outline, but there's so much to take into account that it's taking FOREVER to plot and driving me mad. I can't wait until I start finally writing this thing.

In my life:

- It was my birthday last Tuesday, which was awesome, but not a whole lot else to report

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- Creating A Satisfying Character Arc

5 Elements of My Writing Process

Spreadsheets

I track my daily and monthly progress by colouring a square in Excel, and seeing my progress really motivates me to keep it up. I also use the same spread to keep track of my goals and achievements for that month.

Index Cards

While second drafting, I fill out an index card for every scene in my book. On this card is what characters appear in the scene, what plot (or subplot) the scene belongs to, and a couple other things like if it moves the plot forward and if my character is active. This helps me see the shape of my book, and easily find holes in the plot.

Sticky Notes

I second draft on paper, and every time I find a problem with plot, character, setting, or pacing (or any other major issue) I write it down in a notebook. Using the index cards I mentioned, I put a sticky note for each problem on the scene that needs changing to fix it. This is based on a method by Susan Dennard, though I’ve changed it a fair bit.

Notebooks

Like most authors, I keep a notebook for each book or series I have. In this notebook I write any random ideas that come to me, keep character notes, but most importantly I use the notebook to second draft and keep track of major changes that need to be made.

Pinterest

I know people who create playlists for each of their books, but I couldn’t live without the visual aid of Pinterest. When an idea is flitting around my head, I spill all those images that keep bugging me onto a Pinterest board. The way I know if I’m really dying to write a story, rather than it just being a temporary shiny idea, is if my Pinterest board has 50+ pins. I know if a story has a hundred pins, I really love the idea, and then I move onto the inception stage of a book where I get to know characters and figure out the world.

Unsung Leading Ladies of YA

The Legend Mirror is all about female main characters. In the first 4 books (three of which are released right now) I have Yasmin, Fray, and Minnie as POV characters. I love my leading ladies, and how they’re all strong in different ways, so I wanted to recommend some other ladies who are awesome in their own way. It pretty much killed me to leave out Celaena, but I wanted to talk about some lesser-loved ladies.

Kami Glass

I couldn’t not include a Sarah Rees Brennan character. She’s amazing at writing complex girls that are as different as they are all epically awesome. I love Kami’s paricularly intrepid brand of badass. If there’s a secret, she’ll leave no stone unturned until she knows it and publishes it in her school newspaper.

Puck Connolly

She enters a race for murderous water horses on her regular, family horse, and she’s SO AWESOME. I love her so much. She goes to such lengths to support her family and herself, and be self sufficient, and she’s strong and emotional and all the things I love. I honestly want to be her.

Adelina Amouteru

She’s complex, she’s conflicted, she’s probably going to kill you. I love her so much, and it’s fascinating and chilling to read about the villain’s journey from innocent girl to murderer. I’m already in awe of Adelina and I can’t wait to see what she becomes in the third Young Elites book. Side note: I also want to mention June, of Legend – also by Marie Lu – in this post. June is another flawed, complicated women, and Marie Lu writes them so well.

Natividad

I love how Natividad is both a soothing influence, a calm heart, and a passionate girl who will rebel for the things she believes in. In a world ruled by Black Dogs, she’s the one I really loved and admired for her bravery and her determination to protect her family and her place in the world.

Words & Wonders (64)

Welcome to Words & Wonders, a weekly journal of writing updates, links I've found useful or interesting, and book recommendations. I hope W&W will prove to be useful to you writers out there as well as offering an insight into my writing progress for my readers. Don't forget to leave a comment with your own writing progress!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- POWERS is out now!! In case you somehow missed my excessive build up to the release, you can buy it on Amazon RIGHT NOW!!! DRYAD is currently 0.99 to celebrate the release!

- I'm still in the research trenches for The Lux Guardians. I'm also rereading books 1 and 2 in preparation for writing the last two! I'm really hoping the series will stay at four books in length, but I'm plotting it now and there's an awful lot needs to happen...

- I wrote a random 5K of my Dragon NA UF, which I do love a lot, but also don't have time or drive for writing right now.

- I've JUST begun editing The Forgotten for its second edition, which will release next year along with the final Lux Guardians book. I've only done 4 pages so far, but I've started ahead of schedule so I'm pleased.

In my life:

- It's my birthday in three days! I'm super excited for it, but I'm definitely gonna keep thinking I'm 23 (it's such a nice number...)

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- The Problem With Asian Steampunk, an article I found while researching for The Lux Guardians.

- This Misfits & Daydreamers issue on success and comparison

5 Reasons To Read THE POWERS OF CALLAIRE

Since POWERS is newly out, I thought I'd give you a few reasons to continue The Legend Mirror series and pick up a copy, and spotlight some of my favourite moments in the book. So here are...

5 Reasons To Read The Powers of Callaire

One

Because you want to read about Vic, one of Yasmin’s best friends, going to the Otherland – literally hell – dressed in a green dinosaur onesie. Was I cruel to have him face to Ruler of All Souls in a onesie? Maybe. Would I do it again? Oh hell yes.

Two

This book goes far beyond the other two in terms of Earth’s scope, and shows the Legendary world in a whole host of new locations.

Three

Bonding of all kinds. Besties fighting and then making up? Check. Girls bonding through crazy dangerous situations? Check. Friendships of all shapes and sizes? Check, check, check. My books are always all about the friends. In this book I tried to show platonic friend love with the same detail and time as I’d spent on Yasmin’s romance.

Four

Everyone loves a tragic love story, right? The love between Fray and Yasmin is fated and doomed and all the other good stuff that leads to tragedy.

Five

This book doesn’t really have a cliffhanger! There are certainly elements, but after the end of DRYAD, this is pretty easy going. And it has a happy, hopeful ending! If The Dryad of Callaire frustrated you to no end (and honestly, I can’t blame you if you’re mad) then you need to read The Powers of Callaire ASAP.

More about POWERS:

Yasmin’s girlfriend is dead, but she will stop at nothing to bring Fray back. Even if that means going to the Otherland and making a bargain with the Ruler of All Souls. If Yasmin finds Pluto’s lost power, they’ll return Fray’s soul to her body.

Yasmin’s search takes her, and two of her friends, from Bucharest to France to Wales, and exposes a horrifying secret with Venus, Yasmin’s mother, at the heart of it. If she fails, Fray’s soul will be lost forever.

The Powers of Callaire: 500 Words

Hi everyone! To celebrate the impending release of The Powers of Callaire, I'm releasing 500 words of the book per day. Come back to Words From Saruuh each day to read the first 2 chapters!

Last 500:

“How’s Priscilla?” I ask instead.

Cornelia shakes her head, her gaze fixed on the green book. I can’t see the title from here but the way she’s fixated on it, it could hold the answers to defeating Numina. “She’s mostly sleeping. She woke up once to eat and drink something, and she recognised me but—”

At the strangled quality of her voice, I slide from the seat and put my arms around her. I expect her to push me away or for fingernails to dig into my sides but she only holds onto me tightly. I wait for her to continue at her own pace.

“She asked for Fray instead of me,” she says through gritted teeth.

“Because you were there,” I say gently. “If you hadn’t been there, she’d have asked for you.”

“You don’t know that.”

I pause, thinking my words through. “If I woke up after going through what Priscilla did, I’d ask for Guy and Mavers. I’d ask for my brothers.”

She nods against my shoulder, the movement clipped. “I’d ask for Priscilla.”

“See? She’d have asked for you, I know, if you weren’t there.”

“Maybe you’re right.” She pulls away and savagely wipes her face to obliterate any evidence of tears.

When she lowers her hands, she’s composed, even if her eyes are red and her cheeks flushed. She takes a deep breath, then surprises me by saying, “Tell me what you need, Yasmin. Whatever I can do to help you get to the Otherland, ask me. I don’t care what the others say—they’re too worried about you to see clearly. You need to get to Pluto and you need to make that bargain; I see that even if they don’t.” She touches my arm fleetingly. “Priscilla needs me to stay here with her, and there’s absolutely no way I’m leaving her when she’s this sick, but you can ask me for anything else. You know I’ll do it.”

My eyes prick with tears. I almost hug her again but I know she won’t allow it now she’s in control of her emotions. Instead I nod, throat tight, and say, “I love you, Cornelia. I’m glad you’re my friend.”

Cornelia traces the grain in the nearest bookshelf, murmurs, “I love you too.”

I smile. “I have a sort-of-plan to get there. But there’s no way I can get anywhere with Guy and Fearne watching the Ward. I think my brother will know when I pass through—he’s expecting me to leave. He’ll be ready to stop me.”

“Yes,” Cornelia agrees, her mouth pursed. “I bet he will.”

“I might be able to get through at night, when Fearne’s asleep. She won’t be watching the Ward as closely as Guy, not for people leaving, just people trying to get in. I hope. I’m kind of pinning my one shot on that.”

She nods. “That seems safe to assume.”

“But Guy’s never gonna let me through, not even when he’s sleeping, and he hardly ever goes to bed lately.”

Cornelia rubs the bridge of her nose. “You want me to distract him.”

“I need you to distract him. The only problem is I don’t know how.”

She drops her hand, smirks. “I have an idea. I’ll steal his precious journal.”

“He doesn’t let it out of his sight, though.”

Cornelia pats my shoulder. “Don’t worry about that. I’m a skilled pickpocket. Just tell me when you plan to leave and I’ll make sure he’s not paying attention to the Ward.”

I really hope you enjoyed this The Powers of Callaire excerpt!! The book comes out TOMORROW, and you can get the first book free right now!

The Powers of Callaire: 500 Words

Hi everyone! To celebrate the impending release of The Powers of Callaire, I'm releasing 500 words of the book per day. Come back to Words From Saruuh each day to read the first 2 chapters!

Fifth 500:

I curl up on the padded seat in front of one window, poking yellow filling back through a hole in the leather cover, and wait for Cornelia to join me.

“Rowan’s a prick,” she says with a sharp smile, moving my feet so she can sit. The light turns her blond hair white, her fair skin even paler. She looks innocent and unassuming but the personality that lurks under that saintly veneer is wicked. I return her smile and lean my head against the glass.

“He’s not,” I say. “He’s just scared.”

“Scared boys do stupid things. Fear makes them dangerous—they make mistakes.”

“Everyone makes mistakes,” I argue.

“Men make more than us.”

I glance at her, amused. “So you’re not interested in boys, then?”

“Oh, I’m interested in them.” She flicks her hair over one shoulder, scowling at the strip of carpet down the aisle. “I’m just not happy about it.”

I laugh, a deep rumbling thing that’s as much beast as it is girl. This is what I need—something to distract me. “Are you interested in anyone in particular?” When her cheeks redden and she swears, aware of her blush, I sit up, crossing my legs under me. “You are.”

“That’s irrelevant,” she barks. “Let’s talk about Rowan being deplorable instead.”

“Who is it?” I’ve never had this, the eager giddiness of knowing one of your friends has a crush. Minnie and Ran were obvious from the start, Vic was already halfway in a relationship with Alice when I found out he liked someone, and Willa, my best friend outside the Red, was dating her boyfriend long before I knew them. But Cornelia, sharp, fearsome Cornelia, having a crush on someone? I need to know. “Best friends tell each other their secrets,” I insist.

She raises a perfectly-shaped eyebrow. “Best friends?”

“You helped me save my girlfriend. And I helped you save your sister, didn’t I? Sort of? That’s a bond for life.”

Cornelia pats a tuft of my hair. “That doesn’t mean I’m confessing anything.”

“It’s not a confession. Like I said—secret.” She glares in response, so I take to persuasion. “It’d help me forget about … everything. At least for a while.”

“That’s a terrible incentive.” She shakes her head, debates with herself. “If I tell you it’s nobody you know, will that satisfy you?”

 “So it’s someone I know?”

Cornelia pushes to her feet and inspects a nearby bookcase. She slides a moss green book from the shelf and frowns at it. “Fine. Yes. And that’s all I’m saying.”

I smile to myself. “Thank you for telling me.”

Cornelia makes a noise in the back of her throat. “Don’t thank me.” She leans against the bookcase, her face turned to the fan blades whirring overhead. “Thank you for being interested. It’s been a while since anyone asked me about boys.” She laughs. “I haven’t missed it but it’s nice to be asked anyway.”

“If you want me to carry on asking …”

“Absolutely not,” she sputters. My eyes widen at the sight of Cornelia flustered. She really likes him, whoever he is. But she’s not ready to tell me who he is and I respect that. I drop the interrogation.

Come back tomorrow for the last 500 words of The Powers of Callaire excerpt!!
